LIGHT ON CARAVAGGIO –

We will explore what the 16th Century Italian Baroque master painter Michelangelo Merisi da ‘Caravaggio’ can teach us about photography. From composition to lighting, and his unique ability to portray dramatic visual moment with pathos, his paintings are a unique image education for modern day photographers.

AIM – The purpose of this talk is to discover a little art history, visit Rome in the 16th century, and see what we can learn from this artistic genius to empower our own images for social media content.

MARTIN WETHERILL is a commercial videographer, once exposed to the beauty of via Margutta when he was living in Rome, he soon discovered the power of Caravaggio’s paintings in a church. This encounter changed his street photographic style, resulting in an exhibition of his ‘Neo Noir Roma’ images in a gallery in Queensland in 2017. Between his commercial videography work he has lectured at St Stephens International School in Roma and directed The Living History documentaries for the American Institute for Roman Culture. In Mexico he taught high school Cinema Studies and Photography. After living overseas for many years he returned to Sydney in 2019.
